Van Noy's Poinsettia Bowl Strip-N-Score: The Rest of the Story

By John Ahlander, CougarFan.com

Last night, BYUtv Sports unveiled the Top 50 BYU Football plays of all-time.  At #8 was Kyle Van Noy's strip-and-score in the 2012 San Diego Poinsettia Bowl last December.  What happened right before that series?  Here's the story.

As the game played out, the BYU defense was getting more and more frustrated with the BYU offense for failing to score.  In the first minutes of the 4th quarter, the BYU offensive had just turned the ball over for the 3rd time and the score was SDSU 6, BYU 3.

Van Noy had enough.  He came over to Running Back Coach Joe DuPaix, who was on the headset with Offensive Coordinator Brandon Doman. He ripped the headset off Coach DuPaix's head and yelled at Coach Doman.  "What the <bleep> are you guys doing?  The defense is holding up our part.  Get it going!".  The coaches and surrounding players were stunned.

Van Noy promptly took the field, stripped Aztec's quarterback Dingwell in the end zone and recovered the fumble for a touchdown.  He followed it up two series later with an interception return for a touchdown.  By the end of the game, he had single-handedly outscored the BYU offensive 12-11.

As Paul Harvey would say...now you have the rest of the story.

  2. I think all of us fans were thinking the same thing, "What the are you guys doing?" Glad we got Van Noy. Someone not afraid to call it like it is.

  3. The difference between successful salesman, managers, leaders, missionaries, coaches, players. Setting those little goals to see results. How much different would our season be if Bronco OVER-EMPHASIZED little goals like: One forced fumble a game, One defensive touchdown a half, One interception a half, One 30+ yard kickoff return a half, etc. Why cant the goal of the defense be to score also? I guarantee thats how Bob Stoops, Chip Kelly, Nick Saban, and even coach Whit see things. I bet scoring on defense still isnt on the goal sheet. Bronco is good but he isnt great.

    1. I see your argument, but to have a top 3 defense with the overall skill set that he has to deal with is incredible. Don't get, me wrong, the defensive players outside of Van Noy are solid, but they're not great. Bronco's scheme and the way he motivates players makes him a great defensive coordinator, I would argue top 3 in the entire country. As a head coach he's a good head coach, but let's see if "outsourcing" the OC to Anae can prove that he's a great HC, by competently finding others that can pick up his slack.

    2. How much different would things be if Bronco called players and coaches out from time to time like Van Noy did? There is no excuse for sheer ineptitude, mental errors, and repeated mistakes, e.g., kicking the ball out of bounds on a kickoff, repeated missed easy field goals, and false start penalties.

    3. @Spencer- I agree that Bronco's scheme is at a high level (Although sometimes i question how he motivates his team). And i do not doubt that with the right team his defense would be unstoppable. But top 3 in the entire country? Byu's defense kept us in many games where the offense wasnt up to the task. But the only GREAT offense we played last year was Oregon st, and they still beat us by 18 points. San Jose state's offense wasnt even that great and yet we still lost. Once again the team reflects the coach: Good not great.

  4. Way to go KVN!!! Can't wait to follow him in the NFL.
One defensive TD per half? Really? C'mon! Defense wasn't lacking last year. Little goals or not!

  5. Sorry James, Van Noy outdid himself without your coaching help. He exceeded any goals he could have made for the SDSU game. And Bronco is not the guy to call out here. Defense did its part last year (3rd in the nation) with Bronco at the head of the defense(not those other guys/coaches you mention, and certainly not you). Besides, maybe they do have all of those little salesman goals in mind. What do you know?

  6. My favorite part, Van Noy was a 3 star prospect according to Scout. Three star my ***.

  7. With all the cameras all over the place, is there a video of this anywhere?

  8. Great story, don't know how this got into Bronco bashing but he is a great (GREAT) coach.

This story just makes it more clear why the great coach cleaned house.

  9. I just talked with Brandon Doman's cousin (in Boston), and got an inside scoop. Contrary to what Bronco said, Brandon Doman didn't actually get full control of the offense. Doman really wanted to start Taysom Hill by the second game of last season. But Bronco retained control of the offense, and was obsessed about starting Riley Nelson...and we all saw how that turned out. It turns out that Bronco Mendenhall actually threw Brandon Doman under the bus. So don't be surprised if the "new" offense performs like last year.
